IMS Needling – Lethbridge Physiotherapy
IMS is a dry needling technique that uses an acupuncture needle to release a tight, shortened
muscle which can press on and irritate the nerve. It involves a thorough physical exam to
recognize the physical signs of neuropathic pain and to determine which muscles have become
contracted and shortened from distress.
Penetration with a needle into a shortened muscle will cause a “cramping” sensation which stimulates a stretch receptor in the muscle to produce a reflex relaxation or lengthening of that muscle. The needle also causes a small injury that draws blood to that area initiating the natural healing process.
Finally, the treatment creates an electrical potential in the muscle to make the nerve function normally again. The subjective and objective effects are usually experienced immediately and we also offer extensive rehabilitation programs. You can see a list of conditions that physiotherapists can treat on the Alberta Physiotherapy website.
